Workshop 1: Sunday March 30th, 10-12pm at the North Carolina Museum of Art

Disaster Response for Collections Workshop

Join us for a hands-on disaster response workshop. During this workshop, we will discuss the first steps to take after a disaster and ways to try to salvage your collections. This interactive workshop will focus on water-based disasters and response, but we welcome anyone with an interest in a disaster response to attend. Part of this workshop will take place around water, so please dress appropriately.

Bio: Kayla Leonard currently serves as the Essential Records Analyst for State Archives, where she spends most of her time working with local governments on records management and disaster preparedness. Prior to working at the State Archives, Kayla worked in collections management at museums in Washington, D.C., London, and North Carolina for over ten years where she developed her passion for collections work and disaster management.

Workshop 2:  Sunday March 30th, 1:30-3:30pm at the North Carolina Museum of Art

Beyond Our Lens: Understanding and Embracing Diverse Perspectives

How well do we understand the perspectives from those around us, people in our communities, co-workers and those we serve? Are our minds unwalled and uncloaked, or are they enclosed and encased, shut off from ideas and viewpoints that differ from ours? These questions and more are vital in our collective journey to better work within the spaces we steward. In this session, we will ask three important questions about those with whom we work and serve:

1. What is our standard of reference?

2. How well do we understand protocols?

3. Have we considered that our "medium is the message?"

Led by Michael S Williams, there will be three short excerpts to read and reflect on prior to the session. Please come prepared to read, write and share.

Bio: Born and based in North Carolina, Michael S. Williams fosters community engagement and organizational change through art and dialogue as both a consultant and founder of Black On Black Project. Williams has a natural capacity for relationship building, establishing trust and understanding that support human engagement and growth of the individual and the individual's understanding of others and how it impacts their organization. Through active listening and the posing of difficult questions, Williams invites people to expand their lenses and perspectives, to self-interrogate and reflect, to align thinking with organizational mission and goals, to make decisions with others and potential outcomes in mind, and to hold themselves accountable to those decisions.
