Honoring Karl McKinnon

We want to take a moment to honor our friend and fellow board member, Karl McKinnon, who passed away recently. Karl was a founding member of the Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative early 1990s. As the North Carolina Science Network noted, "Karl’s most significant impact within North Carolina museums was his excitement and passion for the industry and making it accessible to all children regardless of age, interest, or economic ability. His love for museums and passion for life-long learning were infectious." He will be missed greatly.

Donations honoring Karl’s legacy can be made to:

The Schiele Museum Paleo Project - 1500 E. Garrison Blvd. Gastonia, NC 28054

Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative (NC Science Network) - 2230 E. Franklin Blvd, STE 100, PMB 239 Gastonia, NC 28054

From the ARTS DAY '24 website: "ARTS Day is a gathering of artists and arts leaders from across the state to convene as peers and prepare for action, then meet with their elected representatives at the NC General Assembly to deliver a message about the ARTS that is simple, inclusive, and positive. But ARTS Day is more than a collection of speakers and meetings with lawmakers, it is the annual culmination of a movement. The mission of Arts NC is to unite people and communities to strengthen and celebrate a creative North Carolina, an idea that is embodied in our annual two-day conference."

What is FOCoS?
FOCoS is Free On-Site Consultation Services (FOCoS) that provides advice and guidance to small or emerging museums using the resources and expertise found in established museums around the state. As a result of FOCoS, not only do museums receive valuable feedback on their programs and operations, but the museum community and Council are strengthened through the collaborative effort of professionals reaching out to share their knowledge of the field.
