Based in downtown Raleigh, the Historic Sites Assistant Director plays an integral role in interpreting and preserving multiple historic sites. Whether developing education programs, creating new special events, working with the community and volunteers, or researching exhibits, the story of Raleigh is delivered to over 50,000 visitors who frequent one of our sites each year.

This role directs the public programs for the Mordecai Historic Park, Borden Building, Tucker House, Latta University Historic Park, and the Raleigh Trolleys and supervises paid part-time staff as well as volunteer personnel. A high level of customer service is expected to both external and internal customers, with decision-making responsibility across all Historic Resources and Museums Program (HRM) sites and programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises participants in a variety of classes, programs, and events that are social, historic, educational, and/or cultural in nature
Serves as volunteer coordinator and programming director
Assists in training, supervising, and coordinating the schedules of part time staff, volunteers, youth employees, and others
Helps the staff City Council appointed HRM Advisory Board
Works with staff to research, plan, and execute events and programs in support of HRM facilities
Serves as a departmental liaison for programs and subject matter expert for internal and external groups

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in museum studies, parks and recreation, education, history, public history, architectural history, design or specific related content area or field of expertise and up to one year of related experience may be preferred

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's (4-year) college degree in museum studies, parks and recreation, education, history, public history, architectural history, design or specific content area or field of expertise, or equivalent required. Master's degree (6 years) preferred. At least 4 years of relevant experience is required. Applicants may substitute additional relevant education for the required experience.

Licensing and Certifications:

CPR/AED/First Aid/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in museum studies, parks and recreation, education, history, public history, architectural history, design or specific related content area or field of expertise

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Professional practices for historic sites management and interpretation

Acquiring proficiency in compliance with City operating procedures and software as well as industry standard software for collection and PastPerfect

Working in a non-traditional office environment multi-tasking in differing job functions and responsibilities as needed

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.

Hiring Salary Range: $44,860.00 - $55,000.00
